Van Gogh Print - Fishing Boats on the Beach at Saintes-Maries 1888 - Vincent Van Gogh was one of the most renowned and influential artists of the post-impressionist era. Though he is best known for his vibrant and expressive paintings, few people realize that Van Gogh was also an avid reader who absorbed a wide range of books by authors as diverse as Charles Dickens, Emile Zola, Shakespeare, and Thomas Carlyle. In an era when books had become more accessible and affordable, and art journals and periodicals had gradually begun to increase in number and distribution, Van Gogh's love of reading played an important role in shaping his unique artistic vision. By the second half of the century art books had also become popular, and it was through this combination of sources that Van Gogh was able to develop his distinctive style. Today, his paintings continue to inspire readers and viewers alike, reminding us of the power of both art and literature.
In June 1888 van Gogh undertook a journey by coach across the Camargue, a region in the south of France which great reminded him of his home country of Holland. He was bound for Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a popular seaside resort situated on the Mediterranean Sea. The village was renowned for its fortified cathedral - designed to resemble a ship - as well as the curious thatched roofs of its cottages and its plentiful fishing fleet. Van Gogh made sketches and paintings of all of these features which caught his eye. However, he also found great inspiration in the novel opportunities which the place presented to him and was able to create some truly unique and incredible pieces of art as a result.
