Would take off a star for how expensive it is but...... Apr 18, 2011
By Linda ......but it is a great bag especially if you're flying Delta. Delta has this tacky Size Wise box and every so often they go on a tear and make everybody put their bag in the box to see if it conforms to their ideal 22x14x9. Very few rollaboards will meet this because either the wheels or the handles will protrude just enough to catch on the box. This one is sized perfectly, the wheels roll effortlessly and the interior is not overly encroached upon by the support bar like some bags.
It's amazing how much you can fit in this bag. I take this and a tote bag as my only luggage on a 2 week trip to Europe and don't have to check anything.
My only complaint is that the outside top pocket appears to be a short pocket that you can slide a boarding pass or cell phone in. Problem is, the pocket extends all the way to the bottem of the bag and you have to go "fishing" for whatever you put in there. It's not connected to the larger outer pocket, but still it would be nice to have a small outer pocket for smaller items.
I've had no problems with the handle contracting, it operates smooth as silk for me.

The Only "Legal" Tumi Alpha Jul 01, 2011
By WilliWu This is the only Tumi Alpha Carry-on that meets both the 22x14x9" and the 45 linear inch limits used by most domestic airline. For many years, Tumi advertised their bags by the internal dimensions while the airlines go by external dimensions. They have recently updated the Tumi site to show the external dimensions as airlines get tougher with carry-on restrictions and customers return bags that get force checked. While the airlines will usually let you board with larger bags, you never know when you might be forced to check them. This bag holds almost as much as my old Alpha 22922 and makes for much less stressful boardings. Note that the Tumi Alpha "Continental" which is often pushed as a legal alternative is wider than the max allowed by many airlines and also exceeds the 45" L+W+D limit of others. My only complaint with this model is that it does not include hangers. Tumi does sell a nice set on their site, but at this price I would expect them to be included. Some have complained of the handle sticking on this bag. This can happen with any of the Tumi Alphas that I have owned, but is easily overcome by starting the downward movement with a gentle tap with the palm of my hand rather than a steady push.

Does what I pay it to do. Jun 05, 2011
By Wood Wren

I clock a tremendous number of air miles each month due to my job. As I am not home all that much these days, I almost literally live out of my suitcase. I purchased this Tumi about seven months ago and I cannot (I don't think) have made a better choice. I am out for two and three weeks at a time, more often than not out of the U.S. and this case has done the job for me.
I try to travel as light as possible, but even if I did not and tried to haul everything but the cats, this bag would, along with my ever present tote, due quite well. As it is, it is more than adequate for my needs.
I am quite hard on items such as this and must tell you that this suitcase has held up very, very well with the beating I have put it through. I, like a couple of other reviewers here have had a bit of a problem from time to time with the handle sticking. I have found that if I talk to it sternly, using only minimal foul language and curses, that it eventually works just fine.
The cost of this bag is a bit steep but I have to tell you that it has been worth every penny. As I indicated above, you cannot imagine how much necessary junk I can pack into this puppy and it is extremely durable while being attractive at the same time.

Tumi Alpha International Zippered Expandable Carry-On Sep 06, 2011
By Mr. M. Keeling Not impressed. Tumi padlock used to secure the bag through the zipper pulls had obviously become snagged during airport transit. This strained the zipper teeth. I sent the luggage back to Tumi to get the zipper fixed. After several weeks waiting to hear from pelhamgroup.co.uk (they handle Tumi repairs in the UK), and needing a damage report for insurance purposes, I phoned them. Four phone calls later, they finally managed to email me the report. "Damaged beyond repair" was the answer. I was not even asked if I wanted the damaged item back to see if I could effect a repair myself.
Anyone buying this luggage needs to realise that it is just as fragile and fallible as any other piece of luggage. They may use "signature ballistic nylon", but a good piece of luggage is only as strong as it's weakest point. I just hope my girlfriends Tumi case lasts longer than the 3 times I used mine!
(The item was not purchased through Amazon).

Good build quality Apr 07, 2011
By Chaiporn Vithessonthi I agree with the first reviewer that the "retractable" handle was not easy to collapse at times. Other than that, I am very happy with the purchase. The build quality is superb, and it fits almost all overhead bins of different aircrafts (e.g., Boeing 757, 767, 777, Airbus A319, A320, A321, A330, A340, etc.) with ease. I have been using it for a number of short and long-haul trips over the past six months but it still looks brand new.
